W. Virginia Releases January Betting Numbers

West Virginia announced that licensed gambling operators in the state generated $2.2 million in revenue from sports betting in the first month of 2020. Unsurprisingly, the most popular form of betting on sports in the Mountain State is via mobile.

The latest numbers covered the period from January 1st to January 25th, 2020.

Some of the key points from the report:

  • West Virginians spent $35.4 million on sports betting during the first four weeks of January.
  • Retail contributed the most to WV sports betting income in January.
  • Licensed retail operators reported revenues of $1.2 million.
  • Their consumers wagered $15.7 million at land-based betting facilities in the state.
  • Mobile betting generated $970,873, lower than retail betting.
  • However, players spent more by betting on mobile than retail.
  • All in all, West Virginian mobile bettors bet $19.7 million on approved sports betting digital platforms.
  • Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races (operated by Penn National Gaming) was the operator with the highest revenue – taking in $22.9 million in bets last month.
  • The operator reporting the second-highest income last month was the Greenbrier private resort with nearly $350,000 in revenue.
  • Mountaineer Casino, with operates in conjunction with William Hill sports book, reported on $227,938 in sports betting revenue.

We are set to some an increase in sports betting activity in West Virginia, following a lucrative deal signed between International Game Technology (IGT) and Delaware North Gaming and Entertainment. The deal will see IGT powering the entertainment group’s sports betting venues in Arkansas and West Virginia.

This will be Delaware North’s second attempt to enter West Virginia’s sports betting market. Up until March last year, it operated its BetLucky brand in partnership with Miomni Gaming. However, following an infringement dispute between Miomni and fellow sports betting technology supplier, Enterg Software Solutions, services were disrupted and then halted.

Enrico Drago, the PlayDigital Senior Vice President of IGT noted: “Delaware North can count on IGT’s experienced team and trusted technology to help build a sports betting business that can scale for the opportunities of today and the future.”
