Second Online Casino Goes Live in W. Virginia

A joint venture between MGM Resorts and GVC Holdings has resulted in the launch of a new online casino in West Virginia. This is the second brand to go live in the Mountain State.

The new BetMGM casino will operate within the BetMGM Sports West Virginia mobile app with a dedicated app for the online casino games, under a license held by the Greenbrier Resort.

The chief executive officer of BetMGM, Adam Greenblatt said that the addition of a leading igaming offering in West Virginia is a “powerful differentiator” for BetMGM.

“With the largest slate of casino games in the state, we’re confident that our superior offering will quickly become the online gaming destination of choice for players,” he added.

Players at the new site will be able to enjoy a collection of 30 online casino games, including slots and table games. The site will add new games over time.

Following in Footsteps of DraftKings

The online sports betting group, DraftKings was the first operator to launch an online casino platform in West Virginia, after its app went live in mid-July. The standalone casino was the direct result of a compact between DraftKings and Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino.

Over, the first month of legal online casino gambling in West Virginia, players wagered over $37 million on the DraftKings platform. According to the state’s Lottery Commission, DraftKings pulled in nearly $825,000 in revenue through the casino app in those four weeks. The state made $123,696 in taxes, after DraftKings paid the 15% gross revenue tax due.

West Virginia is the third state in which DraftKings has rolled out its standalone app, following launches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

West Virginia passed legislature allowing online gambling in March last year, but focused its attentions on legal online sports betting until July, 2020.
