DraftKings Seeks NJ Links for Sports Betting

The daily fantasy sports site, DraftKings is one of many parties that want a bite of the impending legal US sports betting pie and is already making moves to make sure that it gets its part.

DraftKings is preparing for the day that New Jersey will get a positive ruling from the US Supreme Court, where the Garden State challenged the 1992 law making it illegal to bet on sports in most states.

The group has confirmed that it has entered into talks with a number of New Jersey casinos regarding partnerships for the offering of sports betting in the state.

A spokesman for the group, James Chisholm, noted that DraftKings is “perfectly positioned to succeed in a legal sports betting market.”

DraftKings has over 10 million customers, and the company focuses on daily fantasy sports services around the world.  However, if and when the US legalizes sports betting, the company would be well positioned to enter this industry.

According to the chief executive officer of DraftKings, the company is looking to add to its current staff in order to meet a positive ruling for New Jersey.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” noted Jason Robins in an interview with CNN. “It’s a huge market that has the opportunity to create lots of new players, lots of new revenue and really open up things in a way that they never have been before in the United States.”

DraftKings operates in 41 states around the country and faces regulations in 19.

DraftKings will be able to expand in a regulated sports betting market if the NFL embraces gambling – and this is not a sure bet. Up until now, the sports league has been the most vocal opponent of any type of activity that could endorse gambling. However, very recently, the Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell noted that sports betting could become a reality in the US.

“We have to make sure that whatever environment we’re working in, and some of that may be related to what the Supreme Court decides, some of it may be future legislation, but we need to make sure that we’re operating in an environment where we can protect that integrity of our game,” said Goodell.
